Establishment of Tobacco Cessation, Screening and Rehabilitation Centre At Allahabad

Tobacco is a major preventable cause of premature death and disease worldwide. In developing countries like India, the disease burden, health care costs, as well as other fiscal losses resulting from premature deaths attributable to tobacco consumption, are increasing rapidly.

Present Scenario

  • 91 million people die in India every year due to tobacco use.

  • India second largest consumer of tobacco in the world.

  • The prevalence of all types of tobacco use among men reported to be high in most parts of the country (generally exceeding 50%).

  • Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS 2 2016-17), a national level survey on tobacco use in India reported 28.6% current tobacco users, 10.7% smoke tobacco and 21.4% tobacco chewers.

  • Highest tobacco users in the northern states of the county.

  • The State of Uttar Pradesh has 35.5% tobacco users, - 13.3% smoke and 29.4% use smokeless tobacco.

  • Beedi the most popular form of tobacco smoking, followed by cigarette smoking;

  • Pan with tobacco the major chewing form of tobacco.

  • Most of the adult users of tobacco start tobacco use in childhood or adolescence.

  • Health camps for early cancer detection conducted by SIDSR in villages had  21.6% tobacco users, 3.8% cancer suspected and 29.4% had oral ulcer.

  • Oral cancer at number one among men in U.P. in Cancer Registry.

This was attributed to the dramatic increase in tobacco-associated oral problems like oral precancerous lesions and conditions such as leukoplakia, erythroplakia, oral submucous fibrosis, periodontal diseases, tooth loss and cancers of the oropharyngeal region.  In the region oral cancer is at the top among men due to heavy tobacco intake.

Although 94% of adults believe tobacco intake causes serious illness. About 55% of tobacco users want to quit, but their effort to quit not successful may be due to lack of tobacco cessation facility.

SIDSR plans to start Tobacco Cessation, screening and rehabilitation facility in Allahabad city – at the facility level and at community outreach.

The facility:

  • To motivate users, encourage them to quit and improve their chances of quitting.

  • Help the individual to lead a socially and economically productive life.

At Community Outreach:

  • Identify the tobacco-related oral lesions, smokers, attitude toward tobacco use and the risk groups.

  • Sensitize and prepare tobacco users for cessation.
